Constructing the Unreliable Narrator

#creative-writing #literature #narrative-structure

Write a short story scene utilizing an unreliable narrator where the subtext contradicts the literal text.

Write a short story scene (approx. 500 words) from the first-person perspective of a character who is desperately trying to convince the reader (and perhaps themselves) of their innocence regarding a specific event. The scene must take place during an interrogation or a tense confrontation. The constraint is that the subtext and the details the narrator inadvertently reveals must clearly indicate their guilt or complicity, even as the narrator adamantly denies it. Use techniques such as: 1. Over-explaining minor details to hide major ones. 2. Gaslighting the other character. 3. Physiological reactions (sweating, tapping) that betray their calm verbal demeanor. Do not explicitly state they are lying. The reader must deduce the truth from the discrepancy between the narration and the reality implied.
